Northwestern Basketball Adds Vander Plaats

Northwestern College logoOrange City, Iowa — Jill Vander Plaats of Sioux Center has signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Northwestern College next year. She signed to play volleyball at NWC earlier this year.

Vander Plaats is a multi-sports standout who played four years for the Sioux Center High School basketball team. Vander Plaats averaged a team-high 11.3 points per game in earning first team all-conference honors as a senior. She also pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists in leading Sioux Center to a 21-3 overall record. Vander Plaats earned second team honors after her sophomore and junior years. An honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society, Vander Plaats plans to major in business at Northwestern. She is the daughter of Preston and Lori.

“Jill is a gifted athlete who has had a strong impact on both her basketball and volleyball teams,” commented head coach Chris Yaw. “She has good strength and attacks the basket well. Jill’s success on the court is only part of what makes her a great fit for our program. Her attention to academics is outstanding and she is a person of tremendous character. We are excited to have Jill join our basketball and volleyball programs at NWC.”

Two Des Moines Residents Exceed Bluegill Limit by 128 Fish

dnrTwo Des Moines residents were cited for allegedly being over limit of bluegills at Lake Ahquabi on Saturday afternoon, after a nearby angler called the Turn in Poacher’s hotline.

Park ranger Craig Oberbroeckling charged Win Maw, 47, and Alom Sayabongchana, 69, both of Des Moines, with five counts each of being over limit of fish. Maw and Sayabongchana allegedly exceeded their daily limit by 128 bluegills.

Fines and liquidated damages totaled $577.50 each and they face a three year suspension of their fishing license. Oberbroeckling also seized their fishing equipment. A court date has been set for June 10.

“This case would not have been possible without a concerned angler making a call to the Turn in Poacher’s hotline,” Oberbroeckling said.

Iowa fishing regulations allow anglers to harvest 25 bluegills per day.

No Additional Deer Test Positive for Chronic Wasting Disease

deer_sxc2The last set of test results for deer collected during the fall of 2014 found no additional positives for chronic wasting disease, closing the book on the 2014 deer season that included three positive samples from hunter harvested deer in Allamakee County, out of nearly 4,500 samples collected from across the state.

Iowa has tested more than 55,000 wild deer from across the state, since 2002. The three cases confirmed last December were within five miles of each other, in southeast Allamakee County; and not far from where the first positive sample from a wild deer was found, in December 2013.

The DNR will expand its surveillance to a 140 square mile area in eastern Allamakee and northeast Clayton County, including the area near Harper’s Ferry.
