De Haan Signs With Northwestern

Northwestern logoOrange City, Iowa — Paxton De Haan (Orange City, Iowa) has signed a letter of intent to continue his football career at Northwestern College next year.

De Haan is a 6’2”, 265-pound offensive/defensive lineman who lettered three years for the Unity Christian High School football team. De Haan totaled 42 tackles, including 12 for a loss, and one fumble recovery in earning all-district honors for the second straight year. On offense, De Haan helped pave the way for a Knights offense that totaled 2,312 yards and 24 touchdowns. An honor roll student, De Haan plans to major in chemistry at Northwestern. He is the son of Craig and Sandi.

“Paxton is an outstanding addition to our team,” said head coach Matt McCarty. “He is one of the top linemen in northwest Iowa and has the potential to be an impact player for us on either side of the ball. We are excited to have an outstanding young man, with a tremendous work ethic like Paxton, become a part of the Red Raider family.”


Sibley Ocheyedan Ranked in 1A Wrestling Poll

Unity Sweeps Doubleheader From Sheldon Saturday

unity logoSheldon Iowa — Unity Christian took a non-conference basketball doubleheader from Sheldon Saturday afternoon in Sheldon. The girls game went to the Knights 68-25 with the boys game ewnding in a 53-52 score.

In the girls game the defending State Champs led at all the breaks 21-8 at the end of the first quarter and 45-15 at the half before they went on to the win. Chanda Zomermaand led all scorers with 22 points including six 3-point buckets. Anna Kiel hit for 18 in the paint and Alyssa Feders added 10 points. Sheldon got a team high 13 points from Kayla Van Meeteren.

With the win Unity runs their winning streak to eight against no losses. Sheldon falls to 2-7 on the season.

 

In the boys game Adam Viet went one-of-two at the free throw line with 7 seconds left to give the Knights a one point win 53-52. Sheldon led at the first three breaks up 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. They were in front 35-23 at halftime and saw Unity cut the lead to four points at 42-38 at the end of the third quarter.

Luke Niewendorp was the inside force for the Knight hitting for a game high 23 points. Logan Schiebout added 11. Sheldon was led by Jayden Kleinhesselink with 15 points and Kyle Boerhave with 10.

With the win Unity is even on the year at 4-4. Sheldon falls to .500 as well at 4-4 on the season. Next action for Sheldon will be Tuesday when they travel to Central Lyon to wrap up the pre-holiday portion of the schedule. Unity will play host to Remsen Union on Tuesday.


Orabs and Wildcats Split Basketball Doubleheader

BasketballSheldon Iowa — Sheldon and West Lyon split a basketball doubleheader Friday night in Sheldon. West Lyon took the girls game 60-49 with Sheldon winning the boys game 57-42.

In the girls game West Lyon led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter before Mia Hoogeveen dropped in five 3’s in a 15 point second quarter to led the Wildcats to a 29-18 halftime advantage. Hoogeveen would ad another pair of 3’s in the third quarter on the way to a game high 22 points. At the end of the third quarter the lead was 46-34 with the Wildcats winning 60-49. Also in double figures for West Lyon was Maddie Meyer with 14 points.

Sheldon put two players in double figures with Haily Jungers hitting for 13 and Kayla Van Meeteren adding a dozen on four 3-pointers.

With the win West Lyon runs their winning streak to seven and stand at 7-2 on the year and 5-2 in the Siouxland. Sheldon is 2-6 for the year and 1-6 in the conference.

 

In the boys game Sheldon opened with a 19-6 first quarter lead hitting five 3’s in the quarter. They would hit 10 in the game. At the half the lead was 32-21. At the end of the third quarter Colby Kleinhesselink hit a three off the glass as time expired to give the Orabs a 46-34 lead as Sheldon went on to win 57-42.

Ian Jongewaard hit for 11 points including a trio of threes. Jaden Kleinhesselink added 10 points. West Lyon got a game high 17 points from Issaac Heyer who hit a trio of threes of his own.

With the win Sheldon improves to 4-3 on the year and 4-2 in the conference. West Lyon falls to 3-4 on the year and 2-4 in the Siouxland. Sheldon returns to action Saturday afternoon hosting Unity Christian. The girls game will tip off at 3:00 with the boys game to follow. Next action for West Lyon will be on Tuesday when they travel to Rock Valley.


2015-16 FOURTH Iowa Girls’ High School Basketball Rankings

ighsauNorthwest Iowa — In the latest IGHSAU Girls High School Basketball poll, George-Little Rock drops out of the Class 1A rankings, while Unity maintains the #1 spot in Class 2A. Western fell 3 spots to the 6th with Okoboji ranked 7th. No movement in Class 3A for the area schools, Sioux Center, Cherokee, and Spirit Lake all remain at 5, 7, and 10 respectively.
