Van Der Zwaag Headed to Dordt

Dordt_Defenders logoSioux Center, IA — CJ Van Der Zwaag, a recent Boyden Hull High School graduate, has announced her intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender softball program.

Van Der Zwaag posted a 21-3 record last season with a 1.19 earned run average. She struck out 180 batters and walked 35 and opponents had a .162 batting average against her. She had 26 hits and a .356 batting average and clubbed seven doubles with two home runs and 26 runs batted in during the 2014 season.

She claimed first-team all-conference and all-district honors last season for Boyden Hull Rock Valley and was a second-team all-state pick. During the 2013 season she batted .353 with 21 runs batted in and had 18 hits. Van Der Zwaag posted a 3-1 pitching record with a 2.96 earned run average and struck out 60 batters in 52 innings of work while earning second-team all-conference honors.

CJ is the daughter of Ken and Rhonda Van Der Zwaag of Hull, Iowa. She plans to study Actuarial Science at Dordt College.

Girls State Golf Final Day Results

golf clubAmes, IA — Girls State Golf wrapped up on Tuesday with Unity Christian moving up from 8th after shooting a 395 the first day, to fifth place with a team total 379. Unity’s Chanda Zommermaand recored a 90 on the 1st day, and followed up with an 82 on Tuesday to tie for 4th place, shooting 26 over par for the tournament. Alyssa Fedders of Unity finished the tournament in 7th place after carding a +29. First place went to Samantha Knight of West Monona for the 2A Title after shooting 15 over par for the tournament. Rachel Grenko of Hinton and Ashton Connelly of Emmetsburg tied for 2nd after shooting a combined 169, 23 over par.

In Class 3A, MOC Floyd Valley finished 6th after shooting a 375 and a 376 on Monday and Tuesday. Low woman for the tournament for MOC Floyd Valley was Senior Anna Clemons, who shot a 43 over 185 for the 2-day event. First place for Class 3A went to Emily Snelling of Clear Lake, who defeated Brooke Klosterman in a playoff after both carded a 10-over, 152 after both rounds of play.

Elsewhere in the Siouxland Conference, Okoboji senior Alex Mankle finished 6th with a +23, 165.

Northwestern Basketball Adds Vander Plaats

Northwestern College logoOrange City, Iowa — Jill Vander Plaats of Sioux Center has signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Northwestern College next year. She signed to play volleyball at NWC earlier this year.

Vander Plaats is a multi-sports standout who played four years for the Sioux Center High School basketball team. Vander Plaats averaged a team-high 11.3 points per game in earning first team all-conference honors as a senior. She also pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists in leading Sioux Center to a 21-3 overall record. Vander Plaats earned second team honors after her sophomore and junior years. An honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society, Vander Plaats plans to major in business at Northwestern. She is the daughter of Preston and Lori.

“Jill is a gifted athlete who has had a strong impact on both her basketball and volleyball teams,” commented head coach Chris Yaw. “She has good strength and attacks the basket well. Jill’s success on the court is only part of what makes her a great fit for our program. Her attention to academics is outstanding and she is a person of tremendous character. We are excited to have Jill join our basketball and volleyball programs at NWC.”
