Mustangs to Play for State Tournament Berth

mustang logoGeorge Iowa — 8th Ranked George Little Rock downed 13th ranked Marcus Meriden Cleghorn 58-48 Friday night in the Class 1A girls Region 2 semifinals at George. With the win it’s on to the Region final Monday night at Ida Grove where the Mustangs will draw second ranked Exira who downed Glidden Ralston 58-26 in the upper bracket semi Friday night at Exira.

G-LR trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter but was able to take the lead and were in front 20-18 with time running down at the half. A put back by Mariah Terhark off a missed free throw put the Mustangs up by four 22-18 heading into intermission.

A six point run to start the second half was the springboard to a 43-31 G-LR lead at the end of the third quarter. The teams played even in the fourth quarter and the Mustangs had the win 58-48.

G-LR had three players in double figures led by Mia Graham with 18 points. Mariah Terhark hit for 17 with Teyha Graham adding 12. MMC got a game high 24 points from Sarah Dreckman.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 19-4 on the season while the Eagles end the year at 19-5.


Rock Valley Standout Signs With Northwestern

volleyballOrange City, Iowa — Maddie Godfredsen (Rock Valley, Iowa) has signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Northwestern College next year.

Godfredsen is a 6’1” middle hitter who played three years for Rock Valley High School. Godfredsen averaged a team-best 1.8 kills per set and ranked second on the team with 24 blocks as a senior. A member of both the honor roll and National Honor Society, Godfredsen plans to major in biology/health professions and pre-medicine at Northwestern. She is the daughter of Chris and Kathy.

“Maddie is a great addition to our campus community and our volleyball team,” commented head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. “With her length, she will provide nice depth to our front row. We are excited to welcome Maddie to the Northwestern College volleyball family.”


Day Two of State Wrestling in Des Moines

wrestling gearDes Moines — Day two of the Iowa State individual wrestling competition was decided Friday. Class 2A wrestlers began with the morning session at 9:00am. First up was the quarterfinals in the championship bracket followed by the second round of the consolations. Next action for Class 1A wrestlers came in the Friday afternoon session running from 2:30 until 5:45 with the quarterfinals and second round of the consolations. The evening session began at 7:30 including the 2A championship semi finals followed by the third round of consolations. Scheduled for 8:45 were the championship semi finals followed by the third round of consolations in 1A.

wrestling gearDes Moines — Day one of the Iowa State individual wrestling competition opened Thursday. Class 2A wrestlers began with the afternoon session running from 1:30 to 4:30. That included the first round and first round of consolations.  Class 1A wrestlers competed in the evening session that ran from 6:00 to 9:00pm with the first round and first round of consolations.

HMS and Western to Meet for Boys District Basketball TItle

basketballIt will be the Hartley Melvin Sanborn Hawks against the Western Christian Wolfpack for the Class 2A District 2 boys basketball title next Tuesday in Spirit Lake. HMS advanced with a 79-75 overtime win over Sheldon with Western Christian posting a 69-49 win over Okoboji at the Western Chrsitian gym Thursday night.

In the first game of the night HMS led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. At the half the lead was 26-25. The Margin stayed at one point 41-40 in favor of HMS at the end of the third quarter. At the end of regulation a three by Sheldon’s Ian Jongewaard at the buzzer sent the game into overtime where the Hawks got the win 79-75.

HMS had four players in double figures led by Blake Simonds with a game high 25. He Was joined by Brian Perez with 16 points, Daniel Heitritter with 14 and Jordan Jappenga with 13 points. Sheldon was led by Collin Wolthuzien with 21, Dylan Ennema with 18 and Ian Jongewaard with 14 points.

With the Win the Hawks improve to 13-10 on the year while the Orabs close the season at 14-8.

In the second semifinal of the night Okoboji stayed with the Wolfpack for the first half. Western led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and extended that to a 31-22 halftime lead. With a run to start the second half the Wolfpack were in control 49-36 at the end of the third quarter. That momentum carried into the fourth quarter as Western Christian posted their 20th win of the season 69-49.

Western had three players in double figures getting 16 each from Josh Van Lingen and Ben Gesink. Taylor Miedema hit for 13 points including four 3-point buckets in the contest. Okoboji was led by Tyler Stumbo with 18 points and Houston Hawkins with 14 including four 3-pointers of his own.

With the win Western Christian improves to 20-2 on the season while Okoboji ends the year at 8-14.
