Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council will meet in regular session this Wednesday afternoon, December 20th, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
Among the first items on their agenda is the oaths of office to new and re-elected council members. Pete Hamil and Brad Hindt were re-elected, and Shantel Oostra replaced Wayne Barahona, who did not run.
On the consent agenda are the approval of the previous meeting’s minutes, the claims list, financial reports, a wine permit, the reappointment of Pete Hamil as Mayor Pro Tem, the approval of a resolution approving an agreement with TextMyGov, the acceptance of resignation from Steven Gardfrey as SCAT Assistant Director and full-time EMT, setting the date and time for considering the rezoning of a property, setting the date and time for consideration of a new subdivision, setting the date and time for consideration of the vacation of some property, an appointment to the Planning & Zoning Commission, and the approval of a change order, a pay estimate, and statement of completion for the Airport Runway Project.
In new business, the council will receive the Fiscal Year 2022-23 audit. They’ll also consider a resolution approving an agreement with Beck Engineering for engineering services regarding a possible new fire station where the east ball diamond is now in Sheldon City Park.
If social media is any indication, some people will be in attendance at the meeting to give their thoughts and feelings about the idea. Rachel Becker, who is the chairperson of the Sheldon Parks and Recreation Board has also submitted a letter of concern about the possible loss of the ball diamond. She says the ball fields in City Park continue to be utilized in various youth activities.
The council will also meet in closed session after the open meeting to discuss employment conditions, which is one of the allowed topics for a closed meeting.
