Hartley Man Arrested On Felony Gun Charge

O’Brien County, Iowa — O’Brien County authorities say they have arrested a Hartley man on a felony firearms charge.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, one of their deputies arrived at the O’Brien County Sportsmen’s Club Range northeast of Sheldon Tuesday morning to conduct firearms training. Upon his arrival, the deputy reportedly recognized an individual that he believed to be a convicted felon, taking target practice at the range with a 1911-style handgun.

Officials say the deputy checked the individual’s criminal history, and found that he was, in fact, a convicted felon, and therefore was barred from possessing firearms.

Authorities say 58-year old William Collins of Hartley was arrested for being a Felon in Possession/Control of a Firearm, which is a Class D Felony. Deputies reportedly seized a .45-caliber Sig Sauer pistol as evidence in the case.

Deputies say Collins was transported to the O’Brien County Jail where he was booked and later released after posting a $5-thousand bond through a bonding agent.
