Lyon County Deputy Narrowly Avoids Head-On Crash

Lyon County, Iowa — A Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy is feeling pretty lucky after narrowly avoiding a head-on traffic crash while on patrol Sunday morning.

Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep describes what happened.

Vander Stoep says his concerns with the incident are two-fold.

The Sheriff says the driver of the U-Haul reported becoming tired and falling asleep at the wheel. Vander Stoep offers some tips for staying awake while behind the wheel.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving claimed 803 lives in the United States in 2016, the most recent year for which data is available.

If you begin to feel drowsy while driving, take Sheriff Vander Stoep’s advice: pull over, get out of the car, stretch, walk around and get a few minutes of fresh air.
