Semi Tractor, Pickup, Lost In Rural Maurice Fire Early Saturday

Maurice, Iowa — A semi tractor and a pickup were destroyed in a fire early on Saturday, May 29, 2021, near Maurice.

According to Maurice Fire Chief Jeff Vander Weide, about 3:10 a.m., the Maurice Fire Department was called to the report of two vehicles on fire at 5048 Garfield Avenue, two and a half miles west and three and a half miles south of Maurice.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke as they approached the scene. He says the family had heard something and the dog started barking, then they saw the orange glow of fire, and so they called 911. The vehicles had been parked next to each other, he says.

He tells us that when they arrived, the fire had consumed most of the flammable materials in the vehicles, and they just put out what was still burning or smoldering.

Vander Weide says no injuries were reported.

He tells us that while it was in the Maurice Fire District, the Ireton Fire Department had just returned to the station from a call helping their ambulance, so they were already in the station when the page came in for Maurice, so they immediately took off for the fire scene and so the Ireton department was actually on the scene first.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Chief Vander Weide reports that both the semi tractor and the pickup were destroyed in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 45 minutes.
