It’s National Candy Corn Day!

Candy corn is a tri-colored, waxy sugar candy invented in the 1880s by George Renninger of Wunderle Candy Company.

The candy was originally called “chicken feed”, because corn was primarily viewed as animal feed in the late 19th century. The Goelitz Confectionery Company (now known as “Jelly Belly”) started mass-producing the candy in 1898. IT became a Halloween staple in the 1950s as trick-or-treating grew popular and companies marketed its harvest colors.

A 2026 holiday survey finds shoppers who plan to, or are considering, buying themselves a gift expect to spend an average of $299, up 13 percent from last year.

Men in that group expect to spend $355, compared with $245 for women.

Meanwhile, a separate survey puts average planned holiday gift spending at $708, down two percent from last year.

It’s National Boston Cream Pie Day!

Fun fact, a Boston Cream Pie is not a pie. It’s a cake! It consists of two layers of yellow sponge, or butter cake rather than a pastry pie crust. It was called a pie, because bakers in the mid 19^th century frequently baked cakes in pie tins.

Boston Cream Pie was created in October 1856 by French chef Augustine Francois Anezin at the Omni Parker House in Boston, Mass.

Traditional recipes feature sponge cake layers filled with rim-infused vanilla pastry cream and topped with a glossy chocolate fondant, or ganache glaze.

How we hold our coffee cups is the last thing on our minds each morning, but scientists say most of us are doing it wrong.

A group of South Korean researchers set out to understand why coffee spills as we walk and how to stop it. Through lab trials – walking with full cups of tea, testing different hand positions, and even walking backward, they found a suprisingly simple culprit: the way we grip the cup.

The handle, it turns out, is misleading. Using it while walking causes the coffee to slosh against the cup’s walls and spill over the sides, buring hands and leaving trails on the floor.

The better method is the “claw grip” – wrapping fingers around the top rim of the cup instead. The grip gives more stability while walking, cutting down on spills and saving both skin and floors.
