Spencer, Iowa — A Sutherland woman was taken to the hospital in the aftermath of a single-vehicle accident in Spencer Thursday morning.

According to a report from the Spencer Police Department, one of their officers responded to the report of a one-vehicle accident in south Spencer. When the officer arrived on the scene he reportedly found a 2007 Lincoln in the south ditch of 13th Street Southwest, which is the street that runs behind the Spencer Walmart.

Authorities say upon investigation it was determined that the driver of the Lincoln, 85-year-old Dona Jean Hicks of Sutherland had been eastbound when the vehicle veered right off the roadway for approximately 180 feet at which point officers say the vehicle regained control on the roadway, travelling approximately 200 feet on the roadway, then again veered off the right side of the road, travelling for approximately 225 feet before striking a utility pole in the south ditch.

Officers say Hicks was taken by ambulance to the Spencer Hospital with unknown injuries. According to the accident report, Hicks displayed limited responsiveness upon the arrival of law enforcement.

Damage to Hicks’ Lincoln was estimated at $10 thousand.
