Tractor, Bales Destroyed In Saturday Fire

George, Iowa — A tractor and a number of bales were destroyed in a fire on Saturday, April 18, 2020, near George.

According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, about 3:00 p.m., the George Fire Department was called to the report of a tractor fire about a quarter of a mile east of Kingbird Avenue on 190th Street, two miles north and a mile and a quarter east of George, near the First Baptist Church.

The chief says the fire department saw the tractor fully engulfed along with 20 to 25 cornstalk bales as they approached the scene. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire, plus they were able to bring in an excavator to tear the bales apart, plus they received assistance from someone with a disk.

Sprock says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Little Rock Fire Department, who supplied a tanker and water.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be something electrical in nature in the tractor, as the farmer said he hadn’t used the tractor since last Wednesday, April 15th.

Chief Sprock reports that there was at least $30,000 in damage.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene until 5:30 p.m.
