Heated Discussion Around Evaluation & Need For Help At Pavilion Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa – The Crossroads Pavilion Board met in regular session Wednesday, March 14th at 6:00 p.m. in the Sherwood Boardroom at the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center. Present were Brittany Behrendsen, Sean Hutchison, Pete Hamill, Marv Van Riesen, Kevin Cain, Lora Vande Brake, Peter Wagner, and Tricia Meendering.

The calendar of confirmed bookings was the first item of old business discussed. It’s filling up quickly, and open dates can be viewed on the Pavilion’s website. The events that have taken place to date have generated lots of positive feedback and there was discussion about incorporating some of those comments on the website as well.

The Special Entertainment Committee had not officially met since the last meeting, but Hamill said they are moving forward with booking the Killer Vees for a fall concert. An invitation had also been extended to Bob Kirshbaum of the Pearson Lakes Art Center to attend a board meeting so possible collaboration of bookings can be broached.

Behrendsen was happy to report to the board that the old ice machine was sold. It happened that someone was looking for one and she received $1300 for it through John’s Equipment, almost twice what they were hoping to get by selling it outright.

New business had just one item, which generated a lot of discussion — hiring a full-time event manager. The position was previously a part-time position held by Shannon McCarty, who resigned mid-February. The Pavilion has been very busy and Behrendsen stated that because of this she feels the position warrants a full-time position as opposed to a part-time position. In the interim, the bar manager has been filling and helping out when possible but it is not a viable long-term solution. And given the revenue to date, the Pavilion will exceed the expected annual revenue, so there is money in the budget to cover the additional expense. This request will be brought to the City Council for approval at their March 21st meeting.

Hutchison shared that Behrendsen’s annual review is due to be given in May. After going back and forth over whether this review should be conducted with the full Pavilion board present or just a few representatives, a decision was agreed upon. The board will fill out evaluation forms and then meet to compile them, but the review will not be in the presence of the whole board.

In other business, Behrendsen shared that the annual CAT (Community Attraction and Tourism) meeting, which awarded the Pavilion an $840K grant, will be taking place at the Crossroads Pavilion on Wednesday, April 11th. The next regular meeting of the Board is set for Wednesday, April 11th, 2018, and will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Sherwood Boardroom at the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center.
