Hospers Couple Arrested For Forgery, Theft

Hospers, Iowa — A Hospers couple were arrested early Tuesday morning (November 21st), according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Sioux County deputies say the arrests of 28-year old Becky Desmond, and 42-year old Lawrence Hopcroft, stem from a Sheriff’s Office investigation into a report that counterfeit money was used at the Kum & Go convenience store in Hospers in exchange for actual currency.

According to authorities, upon further investigation, deputies discovered that on Friday, November 3rd, Desmond and Hopcroft allegedly asked the clerk at the convenience store for change for two $20 bills and one $50 bill. Deputies say that a total of $90 in actual currency was allegedly gained by using the counterfeit bills.

Sioux County deputies say Desmond and Hopcroft allegedly attempted the same thing 30 minutes later at another business, but no money was exchanged in that incident.

Sioux County arrest records indicate that both Desmond and Hopcroft face charges of: Forgery, a Class D Felony; and 5th Degree Theft, a Simple Misdemeanor.
