Next Week Is Severe Weather Awareness Week In Iowa

National Weather Service NWS logoNorthwest Iowa — With a chance of snow in the forecast yet this week it’s hard to imagine that it could be time to think about severe weather, but that season is rapidly approaching.

Meteorologist Mike Fuhs of the National Weather Service Sioux Falls Weather Station says severe weather season in Iowa can start in April.

Next week, March 27th through March 31st is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa, and Fuhs says that’s a good time to get reacquainted with weather terminology.

He says that advances in technology, particularly radar technology, have given forecasters a better idea of what is actually going on with a particular storm.

Fuhs predicts that, as technology continues to advance, forecasters will be able to make pinpoint predictions much more accurately, providing more lead time for people to take cover in the face of dangerous storms.
