Sheldon Community Schools Get “A” Grade From Auditor

report cardSheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon Community School District Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting Monday night (January 9th) they heard a report on the District’s independent audit from Eric Gilbertson of King, Reinsch, Prosser, the auditing firm that conducted last fall’s audit.

Gilbertson noted that the District’s General Fund balance had increased by nearly $400-thousand from the previous fiscal year, with the General Fund Balance totaling $1,379,253.  He also noted that the District’s Solvency Ratio had increased from 9.09% to 12.23%.  Gilbertson told the Board that there were no adverse findings or weaknesses noted in the Audit Report, and that they had earned an “A” grade.

In other action, the Board voted to commit $50-thousand toward the construction of additional playground equipment at East Elementary School.  That commitment is contingent on the Playground Committee raising an additional $16-thousand from other sources in order to finance the cost of the $66-thousand project.

The Board also agreed to the purchase of a pickup truck for the Building & Grounds Department.  The truck currently in use is more than 20-years old, with well over 100-thousand miles.  The Board had asked Superintendent Robin Spears to get price quotes for both a new, and a used truck.  Spears presented the price quotes at Monday’s meeting, and the Board elected to purchase a used 2012 Ford F150 SuperCrew pickup with 47-thousand miles, at a cost of $24,900, less a $1-hundred trade allowance for the District’s old truck.  The other option presented was a new 2017 Ford F150 SuperCrew pickup, priced at $37,993, less the same $1-hundred trade allowance for the old vehicle.  Both bids were presented by Ron Drenkow Motors in Sheldon.

The Board also accepted the resignation of Noreen VandeWeerd, from her Media Specialist position.  VandeWeerd has elected to take the Early Retirement package offered by the Sheldon District.
