Sheldon School Board Approves Teacher Union Contract

Sheldon, Iowa — During their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening the Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education approved the Master Contract with the Sheldon Education Association, the union representing the District’s teachers.

The final agreement calls for a 2.87% increase in base salaries, the only item that can be negotiated under Iowa law. In addition, the items excluded from bargaining will be costing the District more, which will amount to an indirect increase in the benefit package offered by the District. According to the agreement, the cost to the District of benefits will increase by about 6.75%. When combined with the increase in base salary, that amounts to a total increase (salary and benefits costs) of 3.65%.

In other business, the Board held a public hearing on the topic of a new roof for the Sheldon Middle School. The current roof was damaged by hail, and must be completely replaced. Following the public hearing the Board voted to accept the low bid for the project, which was $143,418, which was submitted by H&S Roofing. The District’s insurance will cover the lion’s share of that amount. In addition, the Board elected to have H&S Roofing perform work covered in an alternate bid, which would beef up the membrane on the middle school roof, and add a 30-year warranty. Insurance will NOT cover that upgrade, so the District will have to pay the $22,600 cost.

The Board approved a pair of Open Enrollment Applications during Wednesday evening’s meeting. The first was for a 5th grader enrolling into the Sheldon District From MOC-Floyd Valley, the second a Kindergarten student coming into the Sheldon District from George-Little Rock.

School officials also approved the resignations of Bruce Roelfs as District Transportation Director, and Kristi Renken as East Elementary Instructional Associate.

Two individual employment contracts were approved during Wednesday’s meeting. Nickie Bracy, who currently teaches 7-12 grade science at Sibley-Ocheyedan, will be coming onboard as high school science teacher, at an annual salary of $45,632. Jill Holtz was also approved as a Special Education Instructional Associate for $10 per hour for a 6.5-hour work day.
