Heelan Downs Orab Boys Basketball Team in Hall of Pride Game

Sheldon Iowa — It was Hall of Pride day at the Sheldon High School Gym Saturday afternoon. The Hall of Pride Challenge game is a community service event that offers schools an opportunity to give back to a need or cause in their communities. In the case of Sheldon the day benefited Madison Uhl. Maddy, a senior at Sheldon High School has been diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a type of cancer that occurs most often in and around the bones. Ewing’s Sarcoma is rare and typically affects children and young adults.

In the first game of the day Sioux City East downed Spirit Lake 61-41. In the second game Sheldon hosted Sioux City Heelan. The Crusaders left the O-Rena with a 73-66 win. Heelan led 18-17 at the end of the first quarter and increased that lead to 37-32 at half time. at the end of the third quarter the Crusaders were in control 52-44.

With six minutes left in the game Sheldon’s Ryan Van Marel hit a bucket from underneath to pull the Orabs even at 52-52. The two teams battled the rest of the way with Heelan in front by three points with less than a minute to play. The Crusaders would nail down the win at the free throw line going 12-of-15 in the fourth quarter as they got the win 73-66.

Elijah Hazekamp had a game high 23 points. He was joined in double figures by Colin Kasperbauer with 16 and Bryce Reynolds who hit for 10.

Sheldon was led by Ryan Van Marel with 17 points in the contest followed by Jaden Kleinhesslink with 15 points. The Orabs open the regular season at home on Tuesday night against Boyden Hull. It will also be the first boy’s/girl’s doubleheader of the season.
