Nighthawks Advance After 35-7 Win Over Spirit Lake

Rock Valley, Iowa — The #2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks advanced to quarterfinals of the Iowa High School Football Playoffs after defeating #6 Spirit Lake in first round action Friday night at Nick Hulst Field in Rock Valley.

Spirit Lake drove down the field on the opening possession of the contest, but Ben Steffens 31-yard field goal went wide right keeping the score at 0-0. The Nighthawks capitalized by taking their first drive 85 yards which was capped off by a 56-yard Elliott Van Kekerix catch and run to make it 7-0 with 6:29 left in the first quarter. After a Spirit Lake turnover, BHRV took advantage of the short field and JT Van’t Hul found the endzone from 5 yards out to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley drove 50 yards to find pay dirt again. Spencer Te Slaa got the 7 yard touchdown reception to make it 21-0 and that would be your score heading into the half.

To start the second half, Elliott Van Kekerix scored from 5 yards out to push it to 28-0. Elliott Van Kekerix picked off a Connor Jensen pass, and on the next possession for BHRV, Elliott Van Kekerix scored from 5 yards out again to make it 35-0 early in the second half.

Spirit Lake was able to get on the board with under 3 minutes to go, and the final would be 35-7 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.

The Nighthawks improve to 9-1 on the year and will host Southeast Valley in the quarterfinal round in Hull. Southeast Valley topped OABCIG 58-42. Spirit Lakes’ year ends at 7-3.
