Orabs Split Basketball Doubleheader at South O’Brien

basketball_sxcPaullina Iowa — Sheldon split a basketball doubleheader with South O’Brien in Paullina Saturday afternoon. The girls game went to Sheldon 41-24 with the Wolverines winning the boys contest 50-45.

In the girls game Sheldon led at all the breaks in a low scoring affair. At the end of the first quarter the Orabs were up 5-4 and at halftime the game was tied at 8-8. The third quarter was more of the same with Sheldon leading 18-15 at the third quarter break. In the fourth quarter the Orabs found their shooting touch to put it away 41-24.

Kayla Van Meeteren led all  scorers with 15 points. South O’Brien was led by Whitney Sickelka with 9 points. As a team Sheldon hit 11-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter.

With the win Sheldon improves to 2-1 on the season while South O’Brien slips to 0-3.

 

In the boys game South O’Brien led at all the breaks out front 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 27-24 at the half. At the end of the third quarter Sheldon trailed 39-34 with  the Wolverines hitting some key free throws down the stretch to win by five 50-45.

Sheldon got a game high 16 points from Jayden Kleinhesselink and 11 from Kyle Boerhave. The Wolverines were led by Damon Struve with 14 points. Kyle Paulsen and Cody Johanson aded 9 points each.

With the win South O’Brien stays unbeaten on the year at 2-0 while Sheldon is even at 1-1 following the loss.

Both teams return to action with doubleheaders Tuesday night. Sheldon will host Rock Valley while South O’Brien travels to Hinton.
