Strong 3rd Quarter Pushes Wolfpack to Victory

Western Christian 2Des Moines, Iowa — Western Christian advanced to the Girls 2A State Basketball Championship Thursday afternoon after defeating the Okoboji Pioneers 70-41 in Des Moines.

The opening period would feature Western jump out to an early 7-2 lead, then Okoboji would knot it up at 11-11 late in the first. By the end of the quarter, Western would lead 14-11. Western would capitalize on free throw attempts late in the first half, and heading into intermission, Western’s lead was 31-19. The Wolfpack would come out running in the 2nd half and put up a 21-2 run early in the 3rd quarter. Heading into the 4th, the score was 58-23 Wolfpack. Western would turn on cruise control in the final 8 minutes and come away victorious 70-41.

Western had 3 players in double figures. Ashtyn Veer Beek had a game high 24 points. Kaira Moss put in 20 of her own and Payton Harmsen added a dozen. Okoboji got a team high 16 points from Emily Wintz.

With the win, Western Christian improves to 24-2 on the year. Okoboji finishes their season at 24-2.

Western will play in the 2A Championship Friday night at 8:00 pm.
