Iowa — Every so often, we warn you about utility scams. But usually they have to do with scam calls or something of that nature. Today, a company that provides gas and electric service to many northwest Iowa customers is advising of a scam of a different nature.
In a statement released on Tuesday, MidAmerican Energy officials warned people to protect themselves from in-person impostors. MidAmerican stated that they had been made aware of recent events in which scammers have posed as utility workers to gain access to customers’ homes.
MidAmerican officials suggested these tips to stay aware and alert of in-person utility scams:
- Always ask for identification. MidAmerican officials say their employees carry company-issued photo IDs.
- Look for branded vehicles and uniforms.
- If something feels off, close the door and call your utility company to verify. MidAmerican can be reached at 888-427-5632. You can always find a number for your utility company on your bill too.
In our area, MidAmerican provides both gas and electric service in Sheldon, Archer, Germantown, Calumet, Sutherland, Granville, Newkirk, Hospers, Boyden, Hull, Rock Valley, Doon, Alvord, and Inwood. They also provide electric service only in a number of smaller communities in our area.
