IABRN — A lot of news is popping out of Washington, D.C. as we are talking directly to officials of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the National Farm Broadcasting Association (NAFB) Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
We learned from Ted McKinney, Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs, that China lifted its ban on United States poultry imports. The news is huge for the poultry industry, as we have been shut out since Avian Influenza hit U.S. poultry producers in January of 2015.
The National Chicken Council said in a news release, “This action represents a significant opportunity for U.S. chicken and turkey producers. At its peak, the annual value of poultry exports from the U.S. to China was $71 million for turkey and $722 million for chicken,”
Directly and indirectly, Iowa is a major player in both of those commodities.
