The Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Nutrition and Health Services, has finalized its policy for free and reduced price meals for students unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Special Milk Program and the Afterschool Care Snack Program. Sheldon Girl Scout Troop 314 is having a Cookie Sale from February 1 through March 15. They will also have booth sales at Hy-Vee on February 14, 15, 21, and 22 from noon to 4:00 p.m. Cookie varieties include Adventurefuls, Caramel deLites, Exploremores, Lemonades, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Thin Mints, Trefoils, and Caramel Chocolate Chip. The annual Melvin Fire Department breakfast is going on from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1 at the Melvin American Legion Building. The department will be serving pancakes, sausages, omelets, coffee, juice, and milk. Dine in or carry out options will be available. A free will donation will be taken. All proceeds go to upgrading their equipment and gear.

The Newkirk Reformed Church is having a soup and pie supper on Wednesday, March 4 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. They’ll be serving four kinds of soup: chili, vegetable, pea, and potato, along with cream chicken and tavern sandwiches, plus a wide assortment of pies and desserts.
The 9th Annual Cornhole for a Cure tournament will be held Saturday, March 7 at the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center, 301 34th Avenue in Sheldon. Fossil, Artifact, Rock and Bone Day will take place March 7 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Prairie Woods Nature Center. At this open-house style event, visitors are encouraged to bring fossils, artifacts, rocks, or bones they would like help identifying. Dr. James Mahaffey, retired Dordt University professor, will be on site with his collection and resources to assist guests.

The Stuffed Animal Sleepover drop‑off is Tuesday, March 10 at 5:00 p.m. at the Sheldon Public Library. Parents may drop off children’s stuffed animals for an overnight adventure at the library. Please label stuffed animals with the child’s name. Children do not stay overnight, only the stuffed animals. Stuffed animals can be picked up anytime on March 11. Photos from the sleepover will be posted on the library’s social media pages.
