Sioux Center, Iowa — A Maurice teen was taken to the hospital after an accident in Sioux Center on Thursday, October 22, 2020.
The Sioux Center Police Department reports that about 3:35 p.m., 18-year-old Connor Kooima of Hull was driving a 2012 Chevy pickup eastbound on Seventh Street Northeast, between Hardee’s and Casey’s near Highway 75. Fourteen-year-old Kenneth Hulstein of Maurice was walking southbound across Seventh.
The report says that Kooima told the officer that a teen boy darted out from behind a stopped vehicle in front of his truck. Kooima stated he had no time to stop before striking him. The officer’s report says witnesses on the scene stated they saw the teen running westbound on Seventh when he suddenly darted south between stopped vehicles and ended up in front of Kooima’s pickup. The officer’s report states the teen was not in a crosswalk.
The Sioux Center Ambulance took Hulstein to Sioux Center Health Hospital with injuries that were suspected to be serious.
Kooima’s Chevy pickup sustained $1000 in damages.
No charges were filed.
