Active Shooter Report Proves To Be False Alarm

Spencer, Iowa — Law enforcement officers in Spencer responded to the report of an active shooter at a downtown business Tuesday afternoon.

According to Spencer Police Chief Mark Warburton, at approximately 2:33 pm Tuesday, Clay County Dispatch received multiple calls of an active shooter at Maxwell Food Equipment located at 512 Grand Avenue in Spencer.

Warburton says Law Enforcement arrived on scene and determined that the calls were fraudulent and Maxwell’s had fallen victim to a “Swatting call”.  He says swatting is false reporting an emergency to public safety by a person for the intent of getting a “SWAT Team” response to a location where no emergency exists.

The Chief says, at this time, the incident appears to be random with no connection to Maxwell’s being established.

This incident is still under investigation.
