Ashton Man Injured When Pickup Strikes His Motorcycle

Ashton, Iowa — An Ashton man was taken to the hospital after his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck on Highway 60 near Ashton Monday evening.

According to a report from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened about 5:35 Monday evening. They say 24-year-old James Ernest Gradert of Sibley was southbound on Highway 60 near 210th Street in a 2012 Dodge pickup, when he overtook another vehicle, and failed to see a southbound 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by 63-year-old Timothy Blake Helmers of Ashton, and rear-ended the motorcycle, causing both vehicles to enter the west ditch and roll.

Authorities say Helmers was transported to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley by the Sibley Ambulance, with what the report describes as ‘non-incapacitating injuries’. Gradert was uninjured in the mishap.

Deputies say Gradert’s truck received approximately $20,000 in damage and Helmers’ Harley received approximately $10,000 in damage.

Gradert was reportedly cited for Unsafe Passing and Following too Closely.

Assisting at the scene was the Ashton Ambulance and Ashton Fire Department.
