Ashton Woman Airlifted To Hospital After Merrill Crash

Merrill, Iowa — An Ashton woman was airlifted to a hospital in the aftermath of a single-vehicle crash near Merrill early Sunday.

Plymouth County authorities say they were summoned to Highway 75 and Kestrel Avenue at 2:15 Sunday morning, to the report of a single-vehicle rollover crash.

According to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, upon arrival deputies located a 2002 Buick LeSabre in the ditch, on its top. Authorities say the car’s driver and sole occupant, 23-year-old Allison Johnson of Ashton, was located approximately 150 feet from the vehicle in a corn stubble field. Emergency crews immediately requested a medical helicopter which responded to the scene and flew Johnson to a Sioux City hospital with what deputies describe as “life-threatening injuries.”

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation. They say they believe alcohol and possibly speed played roles in the accident. Deputies say charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Plymouth County Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Merrill Ambulance, Merrill Fire/Rescue, Le Mars Ambulance, Le Mars Fire/Rescue and Le Mars Police. Assisting at the hospital were officers from the Sioux City Police Department.
