Hospers, Iowa — A barn was destroyed in a fire on Thursday, May 14, 2020, near Hospers.
According to Hospers Fire Chief Jason Overmole, about 5:25 p.m., the Hospers Fire Department was called to the report of a barn fire at 3847 McKinley Avenue, two miles east and a mile and a half north of Hospers, or five and a half miles straight south of Sheldon.
The chief says from three miles away the fire department could see large flames. They had already asked for the help of the Granville Fire Department, and when they saw how big the fire was, they asked for Sheldon firefighters to be paged to the scene as well. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire.
Overmole says no injuries were reported.
Granville and Sheldon firefighters provided extra manpower and water.
He says the owner had been burning a pile of brances near the building and the wind caught embers and they landed both on the barn and on another building near a propane tank. They were able to save that building and prevent the propane tank from becoming an issue, but Chief Overmole reports that the barn was totaled.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and forty-five minutes.
