Body Found In Aftermath Of Fire In Lakes Area

West Okoboji, Iowa — A body has been found in the aftermath of a fire in the Iowa Great Lakes area.

The City of West Okoboji doesn’t have its own fire department. The fire department from nearby Milford handles calls there.

Milford assistant fire chief Doug Hanna says crews were called to the smoke-filled home at 1213 Okoboji Boulevard around 8:30 Wednesday morning, November 4th for the report of smoke coming from the home.

Milford Police tell us that firefighters attempted to make entry, but were unable to, due to heavy smoke.

Firefighters put out the flames in the living room area and found a male body inside. The victim hasn’t been identified, but the body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny, IA for positive identification.

Police officers tell us the cause of the fire was ruled as accidental at this time and it is currently under investigation. There were no signs of foul play, according to the Milford Police Department.

The State Marshal’s office is helping local investigators determine the cause.

The Milford Police Department and Milford Fire Department were assisted on scene by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Arnolds Park Okoboji Fire and Rescue, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance, and Turner Jenness Funeral Home.
