Boyden Fire Department Makes Quick Work Of Ditch Fire

Boyden, Iowa — One area fire chief says that with the dry and windy conditions we’ve been having, people should use caution, as fires can quickly spread.

The Boyden Fire Department was called out on Monday, June 15, 2020, for a fire near Boyden.

According to Boyden Fire Chief Chris Starkenburg, about 3:00 p.m., firefighters were called to the report of a ditch fire near 320th Street and Kingbird Avenue. That’s L14 and Highway 18, a mile east of Boyden.

The chief says the fire department saw smoke and some burned grass near a culvert as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Starkenburg says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined. We asked him if it might have been a lit cigarette, and he says in this case he doubts it, as it was in the south ditch, and the wind was from the south.

Chief Starkenburg reports that damage was limited to some grass in the area of the culvert

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 20 minutes.
