UPDATE WITH CRASH DETAILS: Car Strikes Train In Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon man was injured late Wednesday morning when his car struck a train at the Country Club Road crossing, just south of East 9th Street in Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Police an eastbound Canadian Pacific Railroad train was crossing Country Club Road when it was struck by a northbound 2011 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 52-year old Michael Jay Vogel of Sheldon.

Police say that after striking the train’s engine, it was pushed into a railroad sign, knocking it down.

Vogel was transported by SCAT to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center with what the accident report describes as “serious or incapacitating” injuries.

Authorities estimate the damage to Vogel’s Chevy at $8-thousand. He was reportedly cited for Failure to Stop at a Railroad Crossing.

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon emergency crews were called to the scene of a car vs train collision shortly after 11:00 Wednesday morning on Country Club Road, south of 9th Street, in Sheldon.

Details of the mishap are still sketchy, but witnesses report a northbound vehicle struck the train’s locomotive.
