Chief: Between 20 and 30 Round Bales Lost, But Quick Thinking Saved Thousands

Sioux Center, Iowa — Over 20 round bales were destroyed in a fire on Monday, March 8, 2021, near Sioux Center.

According to Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland, about 11:45 a.m., the Sioux Center Fire Department was called to the report of a large hay bale fire at 2818 390th Street, nearly three miles west of the Sioux Center Hardee’s corner.

The chief says the fire department saw between 20 and 30 bales burning on a pile as they approached the scene. He says that due to some quick thinking by workers there and firefighters, they were able to slow the fire down, which saved thousands of bales.

Van Holland says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Rock Valley, Hull, and Maurice fire departments.

He says the cause of the fire was that someone working there backed a skid loader into the bales and the hot exhaust ignited the bales ablaze.

Chief Van Holland reports that the damage was limited to the 20-some bales that burned.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.
