Couple Rescued From Stuck Elevator At Sheldon Church

Sheldon, Iowa — There were a few tense moments for a couple of people on Wednesday at a Sheldon church.

Sheldon Fire Company firefighters were called to Faith Community Church at 506 8th Street in Sheldon a few minutes before 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. That’s the former United Methodist Church, just northeast of Sheldon’s downtown. It was for a rescue call.

Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt says they were called to help two people out of an elevator. He tells us there was evidentially an elevator malfunction and the elevator car became stuck on one of the floors. He says it was not between floors, but the door wouldn’t open.

Firefighters opened the door with a key. Hindt says it’s a dual-door elevator with doors on both sides and it was trying to open the wrong door — the one on the side that you can’t exit from. He tells us the couple was in the elevator for 10-15 minutes. The Sheldon Fire Company responded with two trucks.
