Courthouse Burglary Suspect Housed In Lyon County Jail Now Faces Assault On Corrections Officer Charge

Rock Rapids, Iowa — One of the men accused in the Lyon County Courthouse Burglary case — who has been an inmate at the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids — now has another felony charge against him after an incident in the jail.

A complaint filed by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office alleges 18-year-old Luciano Sanchez of Denver, Colorado, is accused of throwing a cup of urine on a corrections officer.

In his statement, the deputy says the corrections officer was tending to an uninvolved inmate when she heard a pop. She didn’t believe it was Sanchez’s door, as his was supposed to have been secure. However, it was his door, and she turned just in time to see Sanchez allegedly throw the cup of urine in her face.

Sanchez was charged with assault by inmate with bodily fluids, a class D felony. If convicted, Sanchez could face up to five years in prison on that charge alone, in addition to any penalty from the courthouse burglary case that he was already charged in.

He faces a preliminary hearing on January 19th.

At last report, Sanchez remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids in lieu of a $25,000 bond for the courthouse charges and an additional $5000 bond for the new charge.
