A Dordt Univeristy Defender and a Northwestern College Red Raider Earn GPAC Track-and-Field Athlete-of-the-Week Honors

Sioux City, Iowa – A Dordt University Defender and a Northwestern College Red Raider have earned Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Track-and-Field Athlete-of-the-Week honors as announced by the GPAC Wednesday, April 1st.

Makenna Walhof from Dordt University is this week’s field athlete-of-the-week.  Walhof, a junior from Sioux Center, hit two qualifying marks in her first meet of the outdoor season, the Wildcat Classic.

On Friday, Walhof placed third in the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 55.35 meters, hitting the ‘A’ standard and is currently ranked No.1 in the NAIA. Walhof followed with a second-place finish on Saturday in the discus with a provisional mark that ranks first in the GPAC and No.5 in the NAIA.

Braden Kalvelage of Northwestern College is this week’s track athlete-of-the-week. Kalvelage, a senior from Hastings, Nebraska, broke the school record in the 200-meter dash at 21.16 seconds, winning the 51-athlete field by over half a second at the Wayne State Classic.

In the long jump, Kalvelage also won the event, hitting the “A” standard with a mark of 7.56 meters, which is first in the GPAC.
