Doon Firefighters Extinguish Cornstalk Pile Fire

Doon, Iowa — About 25 round-bales worth of ground cornstalks were destroyed in a fire on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, near Doon.

According to Doon Fire Chief Blake Van Bemmel, at about 11:15 a.m., the Doon Fire Department was called to the report of cornstalks on fire near a machine shed at 3198 260th Street, four miles east of the south side of Doon.

The chief says the fire department saw a pile of ground-up cornstalks on fire as they approached the scene. He says they used water and spread out the stalks to fight the fire.

Van Bemmel says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Alvord Fire Department. Van Bemmel tells us they brought water to the scene.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.
