Far Western Sioux County Hog Barn Receives Major Damage In Fire

Sioux County, Iowa, near Hudson, SD — A hog confinement was damaged and a few hogs were destroyed in a fire on Sunday, January 15, 2023, near Hudson, SD.

According to Hudson Fire Chief Justin Teunissen, at about 8:35 a.m., the Hudson Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn fire at 3241 Cherry Avenue, about seven miles west of Rock Valley or a little over three miles due north of Hudson.

The chief says the fire department saw smoke coming from the hog confinement as they approached the scene. He says they dropped a drop tank and started shuttling water while firefighters extinguished the flames.

Teunissen says five to ten hogs were destroyed, but there were no injuries to people reported.

The fire department was assisted by firefighters from Rock Valley and Inwood, Iowa and Alcester and Fairview, South Dakota.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined but is believed to have been electrical in nature.

Chief Teunissen reports that there was major damage. He says wall and roof sections from a third of the building will need to be replaced.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.
