Fire Chief: Workers Lucky No One Was Hurt When Generator Exploded

Sioux Center, Iowa — The Sioux Center Fire Department was called out to two calls recently that could have turned out much worse.

According to Fire Chief David Van Holland, the first call was to Center Fresh Egg Farm at 4135 Garfield Avenue, about three miles west of Sioux Center’s south side, for a generator on fire about 1:20 p.m. on Friday, February 25th.

The chief says there had been a sizable explosion there. He says workers were testing a generator when something went wrong and the generator motor exploded. He says the fire was out by the time the fire department arrived.

Van Holland says they were lucky that there were no injuries to people, pets, or livestock.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for only 10 to 15 minutes.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, about 4:35 p.m., they were called out again to a home in central Sioux Center at 418 Second Avenue Northeast for smoke in a basement. Van Holland tells us that after some investigation, they found a washing machine belt slipping and causing the smoke and acrid smell.
