Fire Destroys Garage, House In Hawarden

Hawarden, Iowa — A house and garage were destroyed in a fire on Thursday, July 11, 2019, in Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, about 2:00 a.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a house fire in the 1500 block of Avenue L in central Hawarden.

The chief says the fire department arrived to find a fully-engulfed garage as they approached the scene. He says they found the fire had started in the garage. A neighbor had called it in. When they were there overnight, it spread into the house, but they got that out right away. However, according to Schiefen, the fire rekindled in the home’s attic during the day.

Schiefen says one firefighter went down overnight and was taken to the Hawarden Regional Hospital, where he was treated and was released on Friday.

The fire department was assisted by the Ireton, Alcester, and Hudson Fire Departments and the Hawarden Ambulance Squad.

He says the Fire Marshal’s office was on-scene but was unable to find a cause, so it will go down as undetermined.

Chief Schiefen reports that the garage was destroyed and the house will be condemned. He says no one was living in the home.

The chief says the roughly 40 firefighters were on scene until about 4:00 a.m., and were called out again during the day.
