Fire Inside Round Baler Drops Flames On Waterway At Sibley

Sibley, Iowa — A malfunction in a round baler apparently led to a fire just east of Sibley Monday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Ken Huls.

The Chief says a farm tractor was pulling a round baler when a bale still inside the machine caught fire and dropped flames onto a waterway just north of 170th Street on Pierce Avenue, just west of the north Highway 60 interchange in Sibley.

Huls says firefighters needed about 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze, with firefighters on the scene for about an hour and a half.

Chief Huls estimates damage to the 1995 John Deere round baler at about $7,500.

No injuries were reported.
