Five Fire Departments Battle Machine Shed Blaze West Of George

Doon, Iowa — A machine shed and its contents were destroyed in a fire fought by five area fire departments on Thursday, April 23, 2020, near Doon.

According to Doon Fire Chief Blake Van Bemmel, about 5:05 p.m., the Doon Fire Department was called to the report of a controlled burn out of control at 2147 Hickory Avenue, three miles east of Doon, four miles north, and two more east. The fire was in Doon’s fire territory, but it’s actually closer to George — seven miles west of George.

The chief says the fire department saw the large blaze as they approached the scene. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire.

Van Bemmel says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Alvord, Hull, Rock Rapids, and George Fire Departments.

He says the cause of the fire was believed to be a burn pit fire that got out of hand.

Chief Van Bemmel reports that the building and its contents, including tractors, silage tarps, bale twine, a forklift, and more were all totaled in the blaze, but the firefighters were able to save the house.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for nine hours — until 2:00 a.m.
