May City, Iowa– An Ocheyedan woman and her four passengers were taken to the hospital after an accident near May City on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 7:05 a.m., 74-year-old Darwin Van Maasdam of Ocheyedan was driving a 2013 Peterbilt semi southbound on Tyler Avenue, two and a half miles northwest of May City. They tell us that 43-year-old Jaqueline Barrios Cuadros of Ocheyedan was northbound on Tyler in a 2018 Toyota.
The report says that Van Maasdam was only going about 35 mph due to heavy fog when he saw a northbound vehicle in the southbound lane. Van Maasdam was unable to get out of the way and collided with the Barrios Cuadros Toyota that just left their driveway.
Barrios Cuadros’s car was occupied by the driver and four other passengers. Two were transported to the Osceola Community Hospital by the Sibley Ambulance while three others were transported to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by the Ocheyedan Ambulance.
Van Maasdam’s Peterbilt semi sustained $3000 in damages, and Barrios Cuadros’s Toyota was totaled with $10,000 in damages.
Barrios Cuadros was charged with traveling the wrong way on highway.
The Ocheyedan Fire Department and May City Fire Department also both assisted at the scene.
