Four Area Fire Departments Battle Blaze Near Sutherland

Calumet, Iowa — About 200 acres of farm ground were burned in a fire on Friday, February 28, 2025, near Calumet and four fire departments put it out.

According to Calumet Fire Chief Korey Dau, in the 11:00 a.m. hour, the Calumet Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near 510th Street and Taft Avenue. That’s the Cherokee County line, a mile west of Highway 59.

Dau says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by firefighters from Sutherland, Larrabee, and Cherokee.

He says the cause of the fire was probably embers from a burning pile that was burned about a week ago.

Chief Dau reports that about 200 acres of mainly cornstalks but some soybean stubble burned in the fire and the fire left a trail for a mile and a half.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
