Four Taken To Hospitals After Hartley Accident

Hartley, Iowa– Four people were taken to hospitals, one of them by ambulance after an accident in Hartley on Friday, February 17, 2023.

The Hartley Police Department reports that at about 3:30 p.m., 18-year-old Madyson Torres of Hartley was driving a 1994 Ford Mustang southbound on North 8th Avenue West — also known in the rural area as Vine Avenue, on the west edge of Hartley. They tell us that 37-year-old Gabriela Gonzalez Lemus of Hartley was westbound on Highway 18 in a 2009 Ford pickup.

The report says that Torres had stopped her Mustang at the stop sign for Highway 18, but then continued southbound, striking the pickup. Torres said she didn’t see the pickup.

Three children in the Gonzalez Lemus vehicle were taken to the Sheldon Hospital, one of them by Hartley Ambulance, and the other two by family members.
Torres was taken by private vehicle to the Spencer Hospital.

Torres’s Ford Mustang was totaled with $3000 in damages, and Gonzalez Lemus’s Ford pickup sustained $6000 in damages.

Torres was charged with failure to yield from a stop sign.
