Garage, Contents Destroyed In Fire

Hawarden, Iowa– A garage and its contents were destroyed in a fire on Sunday, September 16, 2018, in Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, about 12:00 midnight, the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a garage fire at 4509 Buchanan Avenue, in southeast Hawarden, across from the golf course.

The chief says the fire department saw the detached garage fully engulfed in flame as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Schiefen says no injuries were reported.

He says a golf cart and a mower were in the garage, but it’s not known if anything on them caused the fire. At last report, the cause was undetermined. The occupants of the property were not home at the time of the fire.

The Ireton Fire Department automatically responds to structure fire calls in Hawarden and vice versa. Also on the scene were the Hawarden Ambulance Squad, the Hawarden Police Department, and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Schiefen reports that the garage and its contents were totaled in the blaze.

He says they used about a thousand gallons of water to fight the fire, and 29 firefighters responded. He says they told the Ireton firefighters they could go home at 1:00 a.m., but the Hawarden firefighters stayed on scene until about 2:30 a.m.
