Hartley Man, Spencer Man Face Felony Drug Charges

Merrill, Iowa — A Hartley man and a Spencer man have been charged with drug offenses after a traffic stop near Merrill in Plymouth County.

According to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, on January 5, 2020, a Plymouth County Deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of C44 and K22 west of Merrill. During the stop, the driver, who was identified as 25-year-old Matthew Murphy of Hartley, was found to have a suspended driver’s license.

The passenger was identified as 27-year-old Michael Murphy of Spencer. The Sheriff’s Office says that during the traffic stop, a large volume of controlled substances was found in the vehicle.

Both individuals were arrested and transported to the Plymouth County Jail on multiple charges including misdemeanor offenses of possession of a controlled substance, and felony offenses of possession with intent to deliver and failure to affix a drug tax stamp.
