Hawarden Firefighters Fight One Large, One Small Grass Fire

Hawarden, Iowa — Several acres of set-aside land was burned in a fire on Monday, May 11, 2020, near Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, about 3:10 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a grass fire near 460th Street and Buchannan Avenue, about a mile south of the Hawarden golf course on the east side of Hawarden.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke and fire as they approached the scene. He says they used only water to fight the fire.

Schiefen says no injuries were reported, and that they were assisted by the Ireton Fire Department.

Chief Schiefen reports that the damage was limited to about 20 acres of set-aside ground, and that the fire had started as a ditch fire, but got out of control.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene 45 minutes.

Hawarden firefighters also responded to a small grass fire south of Chatsworth at about 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. Schiefen reports it was along the ditch on Highway 12.

He says the cause is undetermined, and damage was limited to ditch grass. He says they were only there for about 15 minutes.
