Hawarden Pair Injured In Motorcycle Accident

Hawarden, Iowa — A Hawarden man and a Hawarden woman were taken to the hospital after an accident in Hawarden on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

The Hawarden Police Department reports that about 7:05 p.m., 52-year-old Jeffrey Hulstein of Hawarden was driving a 2007 Honda motorcycle westbound on Buchanan Avenue, on Hawarden’s east side.

The report says that Hulstein claimed to be traveling at a speed of 35 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer says the roadway was on a downward curve to the left, and was changing direction from west to south. The officer says Hulstein told him that there had been a rock on the roadway that made him apparently lose control shifting the motorcycle towards the shoulder. He says Hulstein then lost control as the motorcycle entered the ditch.

The Hawarden Ambulance took both Hulstein and a passenger, 38-year-old Shayla Hulstein to Hawarden Regional Health Hospital. The officer says Shayla Hulstein had fallen off the motorcycle during the accident.

Hulstein’s Honda motorcycle sustained $1500 in damages.

The officer says the accident remains under investigation and charges may be filed.
