Hull, Iowa — A hoop barn and its contents were damaged in a fire on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in Hull.
According to Hull Fire Chief Greg Van Roekel, about 3:45 p.m., the Hull Fire Department was called to the report of a structure fire across Highway 18 from the Hull grocery store.
The chief says the fire department saw a hoop barn full of bales on fire as they approached the scene. He says they doused it with water and then, with the help of an excavator and a payloader, brought the bales out to the adjacent field and broke them up so they could burn out.
Van Roekel says no injuries were reported.
The fire department was assisted by the Rock Valley, Sioux Center, and Boyden firefighters.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a nearby skid loader that had somehow started on fire.
Chief Van Roekel reports that the hoop barn and bales were destroyed in the fire, and a baler and a boat in there were damaged as well.
He says about 30 firefighters responded and were on the scene for about three hours.
