Orleans, Iowa — There were some tense moments Saturday evening when a man became stranded on poor ice on Big Spirit Lake.

A press release from the Spirit Lake Fire Department says they were called around 6:20 pm after getting a report of a man stranded on some ice that was breaking up in the Buffalo Run area. The Dickinson County Communications Center was able to guide crews to the man’s exact location through the use of state-of-the-art equipment. Crews then tethered onto the man and used an ice rescue sled to bring the man to safety. Authorities say the fisherman was never in the water and was able to leave the ice on his own power.

The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene along with officers from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Crews were on the scene less than a half hour.
